Jazzyfatnastees começou como um quarteto em 1993 e transformou-se em dupla em 1995. Tracey Moore e Mercedes Martinez fixaram-se na Filadéfia, terra do The Roots. Passaram a abrir shows da banda e a participar em discos dos caras (Illadelph Halflife, Things Fall Apart e Game Theory) fazendo backingvocals.
